Treating the Cause

What if the words we speak are not really the problem? That might sound surprising, but James chapter 3 takes us on a journey that goes far deeper than simply watching what we say. The tongue, compared to a small rudder steering a massive ship or a tiny spark igniting a vast forest, carries an outsized power that we often underestimate. But here is the critical insight: our words are merely a symptom. The real issue lives in the heart. When we bless God on Sunday and tear people down on Monday, we are living out what James calls double-mindedness, a divided heart that cannot produce consistent, life-giving words. The spring does not become fresh by cleaning the opening where water flows out; it becomes fresh at the source. This message calls us to stop treating the symptom and start addressing the root cause of our spiritual struggles. If we want our words to change, we have to let God change what is underneath them. That is not a discouraging reality; it is actually a hopeful one, because it means there is a real and lasting solution available to us.
