Fear or Rebellion

Jonah's story reveals the dangers of running from God's calling. When commanded to preach to the violent Assyrians in Nineveh, the prophet fled 3,000 miles in the opposite direction. His rebellion caused a life-threatening storm that endangered innocent sailors, yet even in his disobedience, God demonstrated His sovereignty and mercy. The pagan sailors came to worship the true God after witnessing His power, while Jonah found himself in the belly of a great fish. This account challenges us to examine what we might be running from in our own lives and reminds us that God's mission for us cannot be escaped through rebellion.
